Industry Placement

The ‘Industry Placement Scholarship’ program consists of a free five-day Residential Camp at UWA from the 3rd-7th December and five days of ‘Industry Placement’ in January, followed by the Reporting back Session on Friday evening the Friday 1st of February 2013.

This science scholarship connects tertiary-bound science students with primary industry scientists, university professionals and exciting career pathways.
The Industry Placement forms a vital part of the PICSE scholarship program. It provides an opportunity for winning scholarship students to participate in the real world of research science in the primary industries.

The Industry Placement is organised to take place for one week in January, at a time that is convenient to the host organisation and the student. During this week, scholarship students work alongside research scientists to get a feel for what is happening at the cutting edge of science in the primary industries.

In Western Australia, students have a wide variety of organisations with which they are able to complete their industry placement. Some of the organisations that have supported the PICSE program in the past by involving a scholarship student in their work include:

  • University of Western Australia
  • Department of Agriculture and Food, Western Australia
  • ChemCentre
  • Botanical Parks and Gardens Authority
  • Optima Agriculture
  • 360 Environmental
  • CSIRO
  • Optima Agriculture
  • Centre of Excellent in Natural Resource Management, UWA Albany
  • Australian Herbicide Resistance Initiative (AHRI)
  • Gondwana Link
  • GeoCatch, Busselton
  • Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC)
  • City of Bunbury
  • Lobster Harvest
  • UWA Oceans Institute
  • Australian Coral Farms
  • Armadale Wildlife Centre
  • Broome Aquaculture Centre
  • and many more...

How can the Industry Placement Program benefit year 11 and 12 science students?

  • By experiencing real life' situations, students can gain a much broader perspective about the huge range of career opportunities available, perhaps even in areas students have not previously considered!
  • By gaining a better appreciation of the importance of science to industry and to the community.
  • By having the opportunity to get to know a potential future employer during your Industry Placement.
  • By gathering in-depth advice about career options from experts on campus who are able to relate study options to career opportunities.

How the PICSE Industry Placement Scholarship has impacted on my career and study choices December 2011 – January 2012:

Lauren from Albany Senior High School completed her Industry Placement at the Department of Environment and Conservation.
“My placement with DEC has inspired me to go on to university and study in wildlife and conservation and I hope that one day I may be able to become an operations officer like two of my mentors from my placement.”

Lachlan from WA College of Agriculture - Cunderdin completed his Industry Placement at Integrain.
“PICSE and InterGrain have taught me what I want to choose as a career path and that is to become a plant breeder. By working in this industry for a week, it has encouraged me to unearth creative solutions to challenges. InterGrain was a great working environment; everyone was more than happy to answer my 10 questions a minute every day. PICSE has inspired and educated me about a whole new section of agricultural science I never knew existed. Before I came to PICSE, I just wanted to become an agronomist, but after seeing the exciting and rewarding new challenges on my industry placement that has all changed.”

Sheldon from Australind Senior High School completed his Industry Placement at the Armadale Reptile and Wildlife Centre.
“I have always wanted to protect and care for wildlife since I was a young child and with the experience gained and the knowledge I have obtained from many people about this area of work, I am really looking forward to a life of conservation.”

Danielle from Karratha Senior High School completed her Industry Placement at the UWA School of Animal Biology and CSIRO.
“After attending both the PICSE Industry Placement Camp and the Industry Placement, I have decided that the degree I wish to achieve in the future is Zoology. Since I was 6 years of age I was determined to become a marine biologist; however, after working with the animals and attending lectures about people’s experiences with all sorts of animals, I realised I wanted to work with both marine and terrestrial organisms. I can’t wait to start studying Zoology at the University of Western Australia!”
