Industry Placement Scholarship Camp
The PICSE UWA Residential Camp is an action packed introduction to the studies of primary industry science at The University of Western Australia.
The ‘Industry Placement Scholarship’ program consists of a free five-day Residential Camp at UWA from the 3rd-7th December and five days of ‘Industry Placement’ in January, followed by the Reporting back Session on Friday evening the Friday 1st of February 2013.
In 2012 the Residential Camp will run from 3rd to 7th December, held at The University of Western Australia and staying at one of UWA’s residential colleges Twenty five Year 11/12 students from WA will be selected for the IPS and the UWA camp. An addition two students will be chosen as travelling scholarship students to another university in Australia.
The action packed camp program will see selected students engaging in activities at the university in the company of lecturers and PhD students and also on-site with scientists at various research organisations such as ChemCentre, the Department of Agriculture and Food WA, Kings Park Botanical Parks and Gardens Authority, UWA Ocean Institute, Marine Futures and CSIRO.
Students will meet many passionate scientists working in diverse roles within primary industries and get hands-on with some of their research initiatives. Students will find out about many exciting career opportunities, some of which they would never have even heard or dreamt of, within their area of interest and passion.
After the camp, students will have a clear idea of what career, industry and research initiatives they would like to get involved in. Belinda Pope, Science Education Officer at PICSE UWA, will then coordinate a five day industry placement for each student in January to get a closer look at their chosen science career of interest.

The camp is also a perfect opportunity for likeminded students to discuss their passions, have fun and make new friends.
The UWA Industry Placement Scholarship (IPS) program is part of a larger national initiative to encourage students to engage in tertiary science. These Residential Camps take place at seven other partner sites across the nation. Each year we select two scholarship students and award them with the Chief Scientist’s Travelling Scholarship. The two winning students will take part in a Residential Camp on exchange at one of our other activity centres, with all costs of travel and accommodation for the experience being covered by the scholarship.
Belinda Pope will be conducting school visits to speak to Year 11 and 12 classes regarding career opportunities in the Primary Industries as well as this amazing scholarship. If you would like to book your school in for a visit, contact Belinda at picse-fnas@uwa.edu.au.
Applications are open year round and the closing date is the 21st of September 2012. Applicants will be short-listed and interviews conducted in the first half of October.
