Industry Placement Scholarship

On December 6-10 2010, 25 Year 11/12 students from Tasmania experienced a side of agriculture they never knew existed during the Industry Science Camp as part of the Industry Placement Scholarship

Scholarship Camp

29 students from Tassie and interstate spent a week looking at cutting edge science in the Primary Industry sector of northern Tasmania. The PICSE scholarship camp ran from the 6th to the 10th of December 2010 in Ulverstone. During the camp, students learnt about many fascinating aspects of primary industry science and had the opportunity to apply their own skills to challenges.

Industry Placement

Students were out on an Industry Placement during January 2011. Each 5-day placement gaves students the opportunity to work alongside an industry scientist and help find solutions to complex problems associated with their work. Placements included Tasmanian Alkaloids, Botanical Resources Australia, TIAR, School of Agricultural Science, Dept of Health and Human Services, Serve-Ag and Peracto.

Reporting Back Session

At the conclusion of the scholarship program the students showed their appreciation and shared their research experiences with their colleagues by giving a short (3 minute) presentation. As a part of this event they were presented with a cheque for $300, their scholarship payment.

Reunion

In 2011 there will be an opportunity in the first term holidays for all of the scholarship recipients to come together for 2 days at UTAS in Hobart. In 2010, students gathered for an action packed afternoon at UTAS School of Agricultural Science and an exciting and educational tour of the science behind brewing at Cascade Brewery, followed by lunch with the Head of School and academic staff.
