Year 11/12 Teacher Professional Development - 2010
The USQ PICSE two day Teacher Professional Development program “Adapting to Climate Variability: How is Science the Answer” was held on October 28 and 29, 2010, and attracted 25 teachers from 16 schools from Toowoomba and the Darling Downs. This professional development provided a unique opportunity for science teachers and laboratory technicians to learn more about the sustainable practice and research in science that supports many areas of our local scientific industries.
The goals of this Professional Development were to demonstrate the;
- Industry based exemplars available for Chemistry, Biology and associated sciences,
- Relevance of science to our Primary Industries and
- Career opportunities available for tertiary trained students.
Teachers were updated on climate change modelling, the health benefits of purple carrots, and tips on growing olives in a harsh landscape as well as learning some of the finer techniques for tracking down nematodes in soil and crime scene investigation using gene technology. Participants were extremely pleased with the program and expressed significant interest in future professional development activities that could provide greater access to relevant, meaningful professional development for rural and remote science teachers.
Support from Local Industry, including Kialla Pure Foods, Wendland Olives and the Department of Department of Employment, Economic Development and Innovation (DEEDI) as well as Academic staff from the Faculty of Sciences at USQ made this event possible.
