Student comments:

  • “The camp not only provided me with hands on experience in various areas of Science such as fisheries and agri-science, but also enabled me to broaden my understanding of career options available in applied Science.”
  • “As students, we were able to see first-hand how different scientists do their work, what their daily activities may involve, the different equipment they use and some of the research projects they were investigating.”
  •  The Primary Industry Centre for Science Education camp of 2011 out-shone that of other camps, not only creating a strong friendship between the attendees, but also providing us with a greater understanding and appreciation of the scientific careers available in the primary industries sector.
  • On the five day PICSE Industry Placement camp at Alexandra Park I got the chance to explore various Primary Industries and meet like-minded people who share the common interest of science.

Industry Placement

Following the camp each student will spend 3-5 days on Industry Placement in December 2012 or January 2013. Each placement will give students the opportunity to work alongside an industry scientist finding solutions to complex problems associated with their work. Some placements include Bribie Island Aquaculture Research Centre (DEEDI), Health and Food Sciences Precinct, Parmalat, UnderWater World, Maroochy DEEDI Research Station, and the University of the Sunshine Coast.

The 2011 Industry Placements were successful and enjoyable for all parties involved and the Industry Mentors are looking forward to more students this year!

Student comments:

  • Working with Mike and Rob has been one of the most interesting weeks of my life and it has opened my eyes to the vast array of different roles within the science area. I really enjoyed being a part of a cutting-edge research trial that could potentially be very beneficial to the ginger industry and save millions of dollars for farmers. Because of this placement, I am highly considering doing a degree in Horticultural Science next year at university.
  • The Industry Placement has allowed me to have a hands-on practical approach to chemistry-based science and tasks of an Environmental Chemist. The placement has enhanced my knowledge of Primary Industries on the Sunshine Coast and the possibility of pursuing a career in science.
  • My passion for science has grown from the experience gained during the camp and placement by positively broadening my understanding, and so giving me a new perspective of the Primary Industries and associated sciences in Queensland.

Reporting Back Session

The Reporting Back Session is the conclusion of the scholarship program where students will show their appreciation and share their research experiences with their colleagues by giving a short (3 minute) presentation. As a part of this event each student will be presented with their $300 scholarship payment.
