The PICSE team delivers a two day professional development course at each of our activity centres. This year the theme is the Science of Regional Fine Food and Drink.
Professional Development
Each PICSE activity centre at a minimum delivers a two day professional development for teachers. As this year’s theme is fine food and drink each activity centre is focusing on the science involved in the production and processing of food and drink in their region. To find out more about the professional developments being held at the activity centre closest to you please click on the relevant area on the homepage map and select Professional Development on the Teachers menu.
Many activity centres also hold additional single or half day professional development opportunities throughout the year. To find out what is on offer at the activity centre closes to you please click on the relevant area on the homepage map and select Professional Development on the Teachers menu.

Resources
Each year PICSE produces an educational resource as a collaborative effort from all of the activity centres. In 2009 the resource under development is around the theme of organic chemistry. PICSE is aiming to have this resource at a beta stage by the time of the professional development days so that we are able to receive feedback from teachers at these events. We are aiming for a release date on the CD of January 2010.
Concurrently the PICSE Science Education Officers will be working to develop material for the next CD resource. We are planning to use a slightly different mechanism for developing the content and activities for this resource and present it as a collection of hook lessons to be used in Chemistry and Biology classes, specifically designing these around topics that teachers have expressed either they or their students find uninspiring using current materials.
