South Australian Science
The PICSE Flinders and PICSE GrowSmart team have developed a series of new curriculum linked resources which showcase South Australian science. These resources have been developed with teacher and scientist input. The information is up to date, relevant and fun!
Click to download the resources, or contact us for a hard copy of information on where to source the equipment required.
Grey Rot – Turning a Good Drop of Red – BROWN!
This resource contains three experiments in which students can investigate a fungus, Botrytis cinerea. This fungus infects red grapes and is detrimental to the taste and quality of red wine. The experiments allow students to investigate enzymes, effect of heat on enzymes and colour pigments in fruit.
Slimes for saving water! Polymers in the primary industries sector
This resource is designed for chemistry students. It contains two experiments where students investigate the affect of Polyacrylamide (a long chain polymer) on water retention in soils. South Australian scientists are using polymer chemistry in the horticultural industry to help prevent water evaporation and save water. This prac is a great way to teach polymers in context.
This resource looks at integrated pest management in the horticultural sector. The experiment involves students using sticky traps to test insect populations in different environments i.e. the vegetable patch, a weedy area and a native vegetation site. Students can investigate predator prey relationships in the insect world, insect control without pesticides and virus spreading pests!
This resource looks at the coleoptiles of two different wheat varieties – Frame and Wyalkatchem. The experiment allows students to investigate genetics and characteristics of cereal crops.
This resource was developed with Taylor’s Wines… It includes activities and information on fermentation, microbial processes, wine quality, and wine production.

PICSE national resources:
Here are some great resources developed by the national Primary Industries Centre for Science Education.
Lower School Science - Years 7 to 10

Biology - Years 10 to 12
Biology in Context - Advances in Plant Genetics

The Science that Supports Our Industries!

Aspects of Experimental Design

Chemistry - Years 10 to 12

Chemistry in the Citrus Industry

The Science that Supports Our Industries!

Aspects of Experimental Design

Future resource development is planned to provide teachers with lesson starters. The lesson starters will introduce a science concept that will lead into a range of activities and information related to this introductory science concept.
