Industry Placement Scholarship
PICSE Flinders offers Industry Placement Scholarships to Year 11/12 high achieving and/or enthusiastic science students. The Scholarship includes a five-day science camp (where students visit and learn about various primary industries and participate in hands-on activities), a five-day industry placement with a scientist, (where students get to experience ‘real science’) and a Reporting Back Session (where the students tell of their PICSE experience to sponsors, family, teachers, mentors, university and industry staff). At the completion of the Scholarship, students are awarded $300.
Here’s how it works…
-
A PICSE Flinders Science Education Officer visits your school and delivers a presentation to the science class. This illustrates cutting edge research and the importance of science to the primary industries sector and also describes the program.
-
Interested students submit an application to participate in the program. They also have the opportunity to apply for an interstate Scholarship to attend a camp at one of the other PICSE activity centres.
-
Students are short-listed and potential candidates will have an interview. From this, a maximum of 25 students from across South Australia are selected. Students also have an exciting opportunity to apply for a scholarship to attend an interstate student camp, at no cost!
-
These lucky students participate in a five-day science camp in December (usually the first week of December). This camp allows students to visit industry places and research organisations in Port Lincoln and Adelaide. There’s also a day at Flinders University and the SA Aquatic Science Centre. On this camp students will meet scientists, find out about career opportunities, try the technology and learn about South Australian science.
-
Following the camp, students participate in the Industry Placement. This is like work experience, only better… no photocopying! Students are placed at an industry or research and development organisation for five days in December or January. Here they work with the scientists, try the technology and learn about the career pathways. On completion of this placement, a report detailing the experience must be completed. Students then give a three minute presentation on the experience to the other students and industry representatives. At this ‘reporting back night’, students receive a scholarship payment – of $300!
